How to Use Body Language to Have a Better Interview and Life

Why is body language the most important non verbal skill you could have? Because the way you engage with a another person determines what type of relationship you will have with them. It enhances what you're talking about and makes your statements have conviction. It establishes a connection with individuals - somewhat like a foundation to build upon. In the simplest of ways, it makes people listen to what you have to say and acknowledge them respectfully.

As I've gotten older and have experienced an array of environments I can decidedly say that body language is something everyone should be aware of.

It is molded and affected by how we see ourselves and how others perceive us. It's expressed in how we hold our hands, sit at a desk, how we raise our hands and listen to other people talk. The way we communicate with our bodies is endless. It conveys crucial information in a short amount of time. If you haven't thought much about how body language can help or hurt you, now is the time. Especially in interviews. Have you ever thought about what your body is saying to the employer? Do you seem strong and trustworthy or just a puddle of passiveness?

I feel like I've always been analytical about people. Especially how they speak. When I was younger I had terrible anxiety that rendered me speechless even with the most mundane activities. So when I watched this Ted talk by Amy Cuddy I reflected on my mannerisms and how I've grown. After watching it multiple times I've complied a some key points that anyone can use to make themselves a stronger and better communicator.  The talk highlights major issues that affect body language and how they lead to people perceiving us.

Stand Tall, Feel the Power in your Posture

When you gather your energy and centralize it you can instantly feel assertive. If you're feeling small or self conscious, don't close into yourself. Physically open yourself - shoulders back, head up, make eye contact. This allows you to have control and express it to others which in turn builds confidence!

Fake It til you Make It

At the  7 minute mark of the video Amy talks about the affects that faking ti can actually have on you. It's always easier said than done. Not everything will change drastically and magically become better, but faking the feeling and movements can help alleviate the negatives. If you've been debating about applying for a joba nd second guessing yourself - write down reasons or benefits of applying. Even if you don't 100% believe them at the time you're writing them - DO IT!

Make a Role Change in Your Life

Creating a new dynamic in your life can be difficult. trying to new role in your work or school life can have great benefits. Taking on more responsibility on a small scale is a step in the right direction. If you're in a relationship of any kind where you feeling inferior, it's best to cut back the time you spend with them. Even if it's someone at work, or your boss, be direct and assertive in meaningful ways that get your point across.

Interviewing Poses for the Win

Get your body use to power poses so you can feel the benefits. In the video around the 10:30 mark, Amy gives examples of these to try and provides data on how the body reacts to them. If you've ever doubted how you've been sitting hunched over before, this is a sign you need to stop. Gain more respect and positive feedback from trying these out the next time you have an interview.
